Which Material Should You Use?
Engineers often ask: “Which material should I use for a compression latch?” The answer depends on installation environment, exposure and budget.
Stainless Steel 316 — Marine Grade
SS316 contains 2–3% molybdenum, improving resistance to chloride attack from salt, bleach and industrial chemicals.
- Salt spray resistance: 500+ hours to white rust (ASTM B117)
- Operating temperature: -60°C to +400°C continuous
- Tensile strength: 515–690 MPa
Best for coastal installations, marine vessels, chemical plants, offshore platforms and food processing.
Stainless Steel 304 — General Industrial Standard
SS304 handles the vast majority of industrial environments. It falls short in high-chloride settings.
- Salt spray resistance: 200–500 hours (varies with finish)
- Operating temperature: -196°C to +400°C
- Tensile strength: 515–690 MPa
Best for industrial enclosures, general outdoor use, medical equipment and architectural applications.
Zinc Alloy — Practical Indoor Choice
Zinc alloy die-cast latches are cost-effective and dimensionally accurate straight from the mold.
- Salt spray resistance: 48–96 hours (depends on surface treatment)
- Operating temperature: -40°C to +80°C standard
- Tensile strength: 280–350 MPa
- Density: 6.6 g/cm³ vs 8.0 g/cm³ for SS304
Best for indoor electrical cabinets, budget-sensitive projects and high-volume OEM production. Never specify bare zinc alloy outdoors.
Material Selection Decision Tree
- Marine, coastal or chloride-exposed? → SS316
- Outdoor but not coastal? → SS304 or zinc alloy + powder coat
- Strictly indoor? → zinc alloy
- Weight-critical? → zinc alloy
Cost vs Performance
The step from zinc alloy to SS304 costs roughly twice as much but delivers 3–5× corrosion resistance and 50% more tensile strength. SS316 is worth the premium only when chloride exposure is real.
Bottom Line
SS316 when chloride is present; SS304 as the default for most outdoor industrial work; zinc alloy indoors with proper surface treatment if any outdoor exposure exists.
