Weld-On Hinges for Heavy-Duty Doors: Selection and Installation Guide

A weld-on hinge is permanently fused to the door and frame, giving the highest resistance to tampering, loosening and heavy cyclic loads of any hinge mounting method. For heavy steel doors on machinery enclosures, electrical substations, containers and special vehicles, welding removes every fastener that could back out or be attacked from outside.

When to Weld Instead of Bolt

Bolted (surface-fixed) hinges are faster to install and allow door removal for service. Choose weld-on hinges when the door is heavy, the equipment vibrates, security matters, or the mounting surface cannot be drilled - for example on thin-walled container panels or pre-galvanized structures where drilling would break the coating. If regular door removal is required, a lift-off weld-on design gives you both: welded strength with a removable pin.

Design Variables to Specify

  • Pin diameter and leaf thickness: size these from door weight and height, not from habit. Tall narrow doors load the top hinge far more than the bottom one.
  • Bearing arrangement: plain steel pins are adequate for occasional access doors. Frequent-use doors benefit from brass or polymer thrust washers, and from grease nipples that allow relubrication without disassembly.
  • Material pairing: weld mild-steel hinges to mild-steel doors; use stainless hinges on stainless or aluminum structures with the correct filler procedure to avoid galvanic corrosion at the weld.
  • Fixed vs lift-off: lift-off (loose-pin) versions let installers hang and remove the door during painting and final assembly.

Installation Practice

  • Support the door at final height and square it before tacking; a hinge welded to a sagging door will bind for its entire life.
  • Tack both hinges, cycle the door through its full travel, then complete the welds in short alternating passes to limit heat distortion of the panel.
  • Keep weld spatter off the pin and knuckle, and dress the welds before painting so the hinge barrels remain free.
  • On gasketed doors, check seal compression after welding - heat movement can shift alignment by a millimeter or more on large panels.

Alternatives When Welding Is Not an Option

Not every structure can be welded - painted assemblies, aluminum frames and field retrofits often cannot. Surface-fixed hinges mounted with bolts or rivets cover most medium-duty doors, and corner-door hinges carry heavy insulated enclosure doors while allowing full door removal. For lids and covers that must stay open at a set angle, torque (friction) hinges hold position without gas struts.
